Whilst paying tribute to LA Galaxy for winning their 2011 Major League Soccer championship, President Obama teasingly described David Beckham as a “rare man” who could balance a long football career with producing his own line in underwear.

Escaping sniper fire and a steady rain of artillery shells, hundreds of refugees fled from Zawiyah on Wednesday as Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s loyalists fought to keep control of this strategic city — a half-hour drive from Tripoli, the capital — and its oil refinery.
About 2,000 families from Zawiyah, Tripoli and other cities near the fighting on the Libyan coast passed through one rebel checkpoint on Wednesday, according to rebel officials registering the names. Cars and trucks, piled high with refrigerators and other household items, filled a road to the Nafusah Mountains.
But it was not clear that the rebels could or would halt all traffic to the capital. At the Tunisian border on Tuesday, trucks carrying rice and wheat were preparing to drive to Tripoli. Their drivers said they had received news that there were routes around the fighting.
When the wheels stopped rolling Wednesday on President Obama’s three-day bus tour of the Midwest, he was back in his home state of Illinois, but not yet on his home turf. Rather than land curbside in the northeast part along Lake Michigan, where he is most comfortable, the president held two town hall meetings in Henry County, a Republican stronghold in the western part of the state near the Iowa border.
State Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady told the Associated Press Wednesday that Illinois is becoming a more expensive place to live and work due to high sales taxes, rising unemployment, and a slumped housing market. Illinois voters “pay more taxes, they pay more for groceries, they pay twice as much for a gallon of gas,” he said.

Following his three-day bus tour to promote his economic agenda — and not to mention the debt limit rancor in Washington before that — President Obama is finally getting some rest and relaxation.
Syrian troops herded hundreds of people into a sports stadium in the port of Latakia after arresting during raids on homes in the city’s Sunni district.
The arrests came after forces spent days crushing protests against president Bashar al-Assad in Latakia as part of a broadened and intensified military assault against demonstrators who have been demanding the embattled leader’s removal since the middle of March.
Now the US has begun insisting that Syrian diplomats seek official permission before venturing outside Washington.
A US State Department official says the restriction has been imposed in response to travel restrictions placed on US diplomats by Syrian authorities.
In July, Damascus began requiring US diplomats to get approval before travelling outside the Syrian capital.
Reporting from Beirut–International jurists Wednesday released details of how an analysis of cellphone calls led investigators to conclude the Shiite Muslim militia Hezbollah was behind the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri six years ago.
The unsealing of the 47-page indictment, which suggests a complicated three-month plot by at least 11 conspirators to trail Hariri for months, establish his travel patterns and then dispatch a suicide bomber with a van full of explosives to kill him, did not produce surprises for close observers of the investigation and was immediately criticized by Hezbollah.

Question by icantremember29: Can we now we all agree that Sarah Palin “took the money and ran”?
Many felt that Sarah Palin was serious about changing this Country and helping the Republican Party move forward. They also believed that she left her job in Alaska so she could focus on her run for President. Well, after a stint on reality TV and a Book, seems as though she hoodwinked her party and cashed in on her 5 minutes of fame! Cha-Ching!
RJC, She admitted she had presidential aspirations, I think it was a pipe dream myself!

If you are a tea enthusiast and have always been curious about attending or hosting a tea party there is no time better than the present. Hosting a tea party can be an excellent way to socialize while trying something new. If you want to host a tea party but have never had tea before don’t let this stop you – tea is a beverage that is universally enjoyed and easily made.
The first thing that you should do when planning a tea party is to select a date and time; low tea is traditionally in the afternoon and high tea is in the evening, but any time that works for you and your guests is an excellent time for tea. After setting a date and time you may choose to send out formal invitations to your guests, if this is your first tea party you may want to limit the guests to four or five.
Next you will want to decide the venue of the tea party.
A garden makes a beautiful setting for tea, but if you do not have one a room in your home can work wonderfully as well. You will want to make sure that the room is presentable and that the table you are using is big enough to comfortably seat each guest. You may also want to consider using table linens to add that extra touch of elegance to your soiree. When selecting the dishes for your tea party you may use fine china if you want to adhere to tradition or use place settings that reflect your personality.
A very fun step in planning a tea party is selecting what kind of tea you are going to serve. If it is going to be a light tea party you may just want to serve tea and scones, but if it is going to be full tea you can serve a full spread of scones, sweets, pastries, and desserts with the tea. If you are not up to cooking the food for the party there is sure to be a bakery in the town where you live to meet all of your tea party needs. You may also want to consider serving a variety of teas for your guests to choose from. Begin boiling the water for tea and setting out all of the food 15 to 20 minutes before your guests are scheduled to arrive.
After your guests arrive and you serve the tea and food take this opportunity to catch up with friends and enjoy your company. If you find that your tea party is a success you may find yourself planning them more frequently in the future!
Is American democracy being derailed by the United States Senate filibuster? Is the filibuster an important right that improves the political process or an increasingly partisan tool that delays legislation and thwarts the will of the majority? Are century-old procedures in the Senate hampering the institution in fulfilling its role on the eve of the twenty-first century? The authors examine the evolution of the rules governing Senate debate, analyze the consequences of these rules, and evaluate
